After successfully gaining your private pilots licence, many choose to add the night rating qualification allowing you to fly at night, opening up many more flying opportunities.
Night rating is a fantastic addition to your basic PPL licence. You’ll be able to fly after sunset, enjoying the city lights below or the sunset over the lovely countryside. Also removing the worry of needing to land before dark.
There are several stages to adding night rating to your aeroplane (A) licence. Initially there will be clear theoretical knowledge instruction, after which you will need to complete a minimum of 5 hours of flight time at night including at least 3 hours of dual flying instruction. 1 hour of cross-country navigation, with at least one dual cross-country navigation and one dual cross-country flight of at least 50km. Also required is 5 solo take-offs and 5 solo full-stop landings.
On completion of the night rating you will be entitled to fly between official night and official day (30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise respectively).
