Restricted Instrument Rating (IMC / IR(R))

The Restricted Instrument Rating (IRR) course is the next step after you have gained your PPL. It is an essential course that trains pilots to deal with adverse weather conditions during the flight or when coming in to land. The unpredictable nature of the UK weather has made the IRR course a very popular and important rating to have.

The privileges of the IR(R) are vast and allow the following:

  • You to fly UK registered aeroplanes in UK airspace
  • Flight in IMC outside controlled airspace, (in Class G) and IFR flight in Class D or E controlled airspace with appropriate permission.
  • Flight out of sight of surface with a minimum take-off and landing in 1800m visibility.
  • Let-down and Approach Procedures to published Decision Height or Minimum Descent Height and to undertake missed approach procedures.

Restricted Instrument Rating experience required

  • 15 hours, all dual instruction
  • Written examination
  • The pilot must have completed 25 hours post-PPL flying before the rating can be issued
  • skill test
